The Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Serbia hosted the international “Regulatory Sandboxes” workshop as part of the embrAIsme project, held at the Science and Technology Park in Novi Sad. The event brought together representatives of institutions, research organizations, companies, and experts from several European countries with the aim of exchanging experiences and developing policies that encourage the adoption of artificial intelligence among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
The workshop was organized within the framework of the European project embrAIsme – Improving Conditions and Policies for SMEs to Embrace AI, which focuses on enhancing regulatory frameworks and creating a more supportive environment for the development and testing of innovative AI solutions.
The program opened with welcoming remarks from representatives of the Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Serbia and Austria Wirtschaftsservice, followed by a keynote session dedicated to regulatory sandbox models in the field of health technologies. Special attention was given to the role of digital technologies and artificial intelligence in improving healthcare systems, service quality, and the development of new business models.
Throughout the two-day program, participants discussed key challenges in designing regulatory sandbox frameworks, including balancing innovation with consumer protection, supporting experimentation with emerging technologies, and harmonizing regulatory approaches across European countries. Panel discussions and workshop sessions covered the application of AI technologies in healthcare, fintech, green technologies, smart mobility, and rural development.
Particular emphasis was placed on identifying regulatory barriers faced by SMEs, as well as developing concrete recommendations for creating sandbox mechanisms that would enable safer testing of innovative solutions within controlled environments.
Through the exchange of best practices from Serbia, Austria, Spain, Finland, and Italy, the event further highlighted the importance of international cooperation in developing policies that support the responsible and sustainable adoption of artificial intelligence.
By organizing this event, the Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Serbia continues to actively contribute to the regional and European dialogue on the development of regulatory and innovation frameworks for artificial intelligence, with the goal of strengthening the competitiveness of the domestic innovation ecosystem and supporting the digital transformation of the economy.
