The team from the Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Serbia, Darija Medvecki, Milica Škipina, Nikola Jovišić, Miloš Košprdić, and Milica Brković, took part in the prestigious Mediterranean Machine Learning Summer School (M2L 2025), held at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Naval Architecture (FESB) in Split. This summer school is recognized as one of Europe’s leading gatherings for young researchers in the fields of machine learning and artificial intelligence.
M2L 2025 brought together renowned global experts, university professors, and researchers from top academic and industrial institutions, as well as a large community of young talents and AI enthusiasts from across the world. Over five intensive days, Split became a hub of the international AI community, hosting more than 300 participants from 56 countries and 63 nationalities. The school’s selectivity is reflected in the numbers: nearly 1,700 applications were submitted, with only 18% of candidates accepted, underscoring M2L’s reputation as one of the most competitive and respected summer schools in Europe.
Lecturers came from prestigious universities such as Cambridge, Oxford, University College London, Warsaw, Neuchâtel, TU Delft, UC Santa Barbara, and Dubrovnik, as well as from global technology leaders including Google DeepMind, Meta, Amazon, and Cohere. The program covered a wide range of cutting-edge topics, with particular attention drawn to the lecture on AlphaFold, the revolutionary model whose development contributed to the awarding of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
Throughout the program, participants engaged with the latest research in deep learning, diffusion models, graph neural networks, and other frontier areas. Alongside lectures, interactive workshops and discussions provided valuable opportunities for open exchange of ideas and experiences between participants and instructors.
The presence of researchers from the Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Serbia at M2L 2025 once again highlighted the importance of integrating Serbia’s scientific community into international networks. By actively engaging in lectures, workshops, and discussions, IVI team members expanded their knowledge, strengthened their research skills, and built new connections with colleagues from diverse disciplines. This experience represents a valuable contribution to the Institute’s growth and serves as an incentive for involving new generations of researchers in the field of artificial intelligence.
The Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Serbia extends its gratitude to the organizers of M2L 2025 for their excellent organization and warm hospitality. Participation in such events further motivates our team to continue developing projects and initiatives that will strengthen the AI ecosystem in Serbia, enhance international collaboration, and position the country more firmly on the global map of leading AI research centers.
