Recently, one of the most significant events in the region related to artificial intelligence took place—the Eastern European Machine Learning Summer School (EEML 2024), organized by the Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Serbia and a team of scientists from Google DeepMind, in collaboration with the Science and Technology Park in Novi Sad.
This event brought together over 190 participants from 47 countries, including PhD students, researchers, and industry professionals. Over the course of six days of intensive lectures and workshops, participants had the opportunity to gain new knowledge directly from leading global experts in the field of artificial intelligence.
Professor Dr. Dubravko Ćulibrk, acting director of the Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Serbia, emphasized the importance of this event for the region, noting that Serbia successfully demonstrated its potential to attract the attention of the international AI community. He particularly highlighted that participants were able to familiarize themselves with the latest research and applications in artificial intelligence, including advanced deep learning architectures, multimodal learning, and generative models.
Dr. Matko Bošnjak, a scientist from Google DeepMind and one of the lecturers at EEML, underscored the importance of focusing on creating AI solutions with practical applications across various industries. According to him, Google DeepMind is actively exploring the possibilities of applying artificial intelligence in areas that have not been the focus so far, thereby opening up new perspectives for future development.
The hosting of EEML in Novi Sad confirms the importance of investing in science and research, as well as the need for continuous education and fostering collaboration between academic institutions and industry. The Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Serbia continues to support such initiatives, which aim not only to advance artificial intelligence but also to ensure its positive impact on society as a whole.
