The Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Serbia has officially become part of the international project AI-Empowered Innovation in Natural Science and Engineering for the Circular Economy (AI-InnoScEnCE), which focuses on advancing the circular economy through the application of artificial intelligence and innovation in natural and technical sciences. The project is implemented within the Ino-Science program and supports Europe’s vision of sustainable development and the creation of innovation-driven ecosystems.
The circular economy is increasingly recognized as one of the most effective approaches to reducing waste, improving resource efficiency, and strengthening the sustainability of economic systems. The AI-InnoScEnCE project aims to position European universities as key actors within regional innovation ecosystems by 2030, with a strong emphasis on developing knowledge, entrepreneurial capacity, and AI-based technological solutions.
As part of this initiative, project partners will work on enhancing research capabilities in natural and engineering sciences through best-practice exchange and the development of new solutions for the circular economy. A major component of the project is the creation of training programs and research labs dedicated to integrating AI into scientific workflows, promoting its use as a general-purpose innovation tool. Additionally, efforts will be made to strengthen collaboration between universities and regional circular-economy ecosystems by identifying stakeholders, engaging industry and civil society, and developing a joint innovation roadmap.
The project will also introduce organizational processes and AI-assisted creativity tools to support continuous generation of innovative and entrepreneurial ideas within universities. The overall approach is based on the “knowledge triangle” model, integrating research, education, and innovation, while extending it to include civil society as a driver of systemic change.
Implementation is structured in two phases: the first focuses on benchmarking research capacities and developing methodologies, while the second involves practical implementation, open knowledge exchange, joint research activities, and demo days with industry partners.
IVI’s involvement in AI-InnoScEnCE marks an important step forward in strengthening Serbia’s research landscape, developing new AI-driven solutions for sustainability, and deepening collaboration with European partners to build the technologies of tomorrow.
